Program Note
Leonardo’s Flying Machine, commissioned by Dr. Jesse Cook (University of Central Florida) was originally conceived with a different title; to be in a style more bombastic and anarchistic. However, as the writing process began, much of the material that was originally designated for the work felt contrived and for the first time in a while I was struggling to write. Over the years I have made a practice of keeping a list of potential musical titles as usually my work begins with a thematic title, leading the music creation process. At that moment, I had a few pieces of musical material I enjoyed and instead of fitting the music to my original conception, I decided to look at my title list and find a title that felt appropriate for the piece; where I found Leonardo’s Flying Machine. An appropriate title as the jagged fanfare-like style and ⅞ groove was fitting for his excitement in the potential for flight and the smooth/legato section best representing the daydream of the device eloquently flying through the air. The work was originally designed at conception to include 6-part and 7-part versions so that various trumpet ensembles could experience the work.
Available in
- 6 parts for sextet
- 7 parts for septet (with Bass trumpet and adaptable bass clef part)
