This tone poem for Wind Ensemble reminds us that emotions and memories go hand in hand, and that when past memories surface we have the opportunity to relive those emotions; sometimes in vivid color.
Program Notes (by the composer)
Memories in Vivid Color is a tone poem inspired by a request from the commissioning group to write a piece in honor of the 15 year anniversary of their high school band program. Memories are an integral part of our lives; deeply what it means to be human. Through the course of our life we undoubtedly experience members we wish to remember and, perhaps, others we wish to leave behind. However, our picture in life is incomplete without a vast array of experiences and it was my hope to capture the essence of those feelings in this work. On a deeply personal note, this work was written at a time when I lost both of my last remaining grand-parents and two beloved pets (my first pets as an adult). Memories are even more important at times of loss and as I found myself looking through old photographs it became all the more evident that the ability to see these images aided the vibrancy of which we can recollect our experiences. It is my hope this piece can play a small role helping our listeners reflect on their lives and re-experience their Memories in Vivid Color.
